about Alateen

Alateen meetings are for people ages 12 to 19 who have been affected by someone else’s drinking.

Alateen groups are led by the teens where they can discuss their difficulties and share their experience, strength and hope with each other. They learn that they are not the cause of anyone else’s drinking and that they cannot change or control anyone but themselves.

Alateen groups are facilitated by two certified adult sponsors from Alanon who have passed background checks and met other specific requirements, ensuring a supportive and structured environment for young people.

Alateen is not a religious program. Even if the meeting is held in a religious center, the group pays rent and is not affiliated in any way with any religious group.

Teens are free to ask questions or talk about their situation at their first meeting, or just say “I pass” if they just want to listen. There are no dues or fees for participation.
